FAQ
Aral Sea FAQ
Read quick answers about regional police checkpoints, 4WD tour requirements, and visiting the rusted ships.
Why did the Aral Sea dry up?
Disastrous 1960s Soviet irrigation projects caused the water to recede over 150 kilometers away. The sea was once the 4th largest lake in the world. It has shrunk to less than 10% of its original size.
Is it safe to visit the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan?
Yes, if prepared. Do not drive into the dried seabed without a 4WD vehicle and local guide. Bring plenty of extra drinking water and your original passport for police checkpoints.
How to get to Moynaq from Nukus?
A daily marshrutka minivan leaves the Nukus bus station around 9:00 AM. Tickets cost 20,000 UZS for the 3-hour journey. You can also hire a private taxi for roughly $60.
Can you still swim in the Aral Sea?
The remaining water is hyper-saline. The mud near the water is incredibly thick and difficult to wash off. Running water and shower facilities are not available at the remote shores.
Is the Aral Sea completely gone?
No, a western basin survives. However, the water has shrunk to less than 10% of its original volume. The exposed seabed created the 60,000 square kilometer Aralkum Desert.
How far is the water from Moynaq?
The current shoreline of the Aral Sea is approximately 150 kilometers away from Moynaq. Reaching it requires 2 to 3 days of driving via specialized 4WD tours.
How much does an Aral Sea tour cost?
Guided 2 to 3-day 4WD tours from Nukus cost between $150 and $400+. Day trips from Khiva run from $210 to $299. See our Tickets page for specific operators.
Are there tours to the Aral Sea from Khiva?
Yes. Operators offer long 12 to 16-hour combo day trips starting from Khiva. These often include the Moynaq Ship Cemetery, local museums, and the Chilpik Kala fortress.
What is the ship graveyard in Uzbekistan?
It is a collection of about 11 rusted Soviet-era fishing boats. They sit stranded in the sand directly below the former Moynaq lighthouse viewpoint.
Where do you sleep on an Aral Sea tour?
Multi-day 4WD tours include overnight stays in traditional Karakalpak felt yurts. These are set up near the shoreline and offer virtually no light pollution.
What is the Aralkum Desert?
It is over 60,000 square kilometers of new, salty desert terrain. It formed directly on top of the toxic, dried seabed as the Aral Sea evaporated.
Can you visit the Aral Sea without a tour?
You can reach the Moynaq Ship Cemetery independently via bus or taxi. However, driving across the unmarked seabed to the actual water strictly requires a guided 4WD tour.
