The Aralkum Desert and Ustyurt Plateau

Discover the harsh terrain that replaced the Aral Sea and the steep limestone cliffs bordering the remaining western basin.

When the Aral Sea receded over 150 kilometers, it left behind an exposed seabed covering more than 60,000 square kilometers. This salty terrain is now known as the Aralkum Desert.

Guided 4WD tours cross this landscape to reach the Ustyurt Plateau. The plateau features 150-meter limestone cliffs that drop directly toward the surviving water. Summer temperatures here regularly exceed 40°C (104°F), making spring or autumn the safest seasons for off-road travel.
